AMD's Q3 2024 earnings call today wasn't optimistic about gaming sales overall, but it did confirm a hot new rumor about GPUs – specifically the launch of AMD's next-gen RDNA 4 parts early next year. “We are on track to bring the first RDNA4 GPUs to market in early 2025,” AMD CEO Lisa Su said, and the company confirmed this PCWorld that it is the first time these plans have been shared publicly.
“In addition to a strong increase in gaming performance, RDNA 4 delivers significantly higher ray tracing performance and adds new AI features,” Su said in the conference call.
AMD expects gaming revenue to continue to decline this quarter, thanks in large part to its aging PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, which isn't exactly the company's main focus these days anyway. On today's call, Su pointed out that gaming accounts for just two percent of the company's revenue, while data centers now account for well over half of the company's business. She says that after spending 10 years turning AMD around, her next task is to “make AMD the end-to-end AI leader.”
