There have been many rumors about a new iPad Mini for more than a year, but most indicators point to a processor boost and little else. However, we haven't heard much about a new entry-level iPad yet, which is why it's a good time to buy either the ninth or tenth generation model – both are still on sale at their best price yet during Amazon Prime Day – Sales in October.
You can currently purchase Apple's last-generation iPad at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target with Wi-Fi and 64GB of storage starting at $199 ($130 off). The 10th generation model is now available at the same three retailers – Amazon, Best Buy and Target – in the same configuration starting at $299 ($50 off). You can also get one with 256GB of storage for $349.99 ($130 off) or $449 ($50 off).
Both entry-level tablets are good for streaming, surfing the web and sending emails, although the newer model has a slightly larger 10.9-inch screen and a faster processor in the form of Apple's A14 Bionic. It also features a USB-C port instead of Apple's Lightning port (phew) and adopts the modern design language of the more expensive iPad Air, resulting in smaller bezels and a Touch ID fingerprint scanner in the power button.
I would argue that the 10th generation iPad model is the better buy given its newer specs and current price; However, the ninth-generation model is still great for kids and anyone looking for a basic tablet at an affordable price. Heck, it even offers a 3.5mm headphone jack – a welcome rarity in 2024.
