Best cheap Kindle deals September 2024

If you're looking for a device to read e-books on, you have a few options. You can of course buy a tablet or use your phone, but these devices are versatile and can be used for a lot of things, like browsing the web or doomscrolling on X. If you're looking for something to exclusively read books on, e-readers, while niche, are designed to store all your books in a virtual library with limited functionality.

Amazon, one of the pioneers of e-readers, has dominated the market for years with its ever-expanding Kindle lineup, which consists of several unique models with their own pros and cons. The majority of the devices function as a simple e-book reader. With the Kindle Scribe, however, Amazon seems to be moving beyond books into the realm of writing – something that should lead to future Kindles functioning more like physical paper.

Below we've listed all the models currently available. Sometimes there's no deal on one or even all of the products, but in those cases we've listed the most current sale price. Also, remember that Amazon's next Prime Day is scheduled for October 8 and 9. If last year's Prime Big Deal Days are any indication, we'll likely see discounts on a number of Amazon devices – including Kindles – during that time.

The best Kindle deals (2022)

In case you missed it, Amazon has announced a new entry-level Kindle for 2022 to replace the 2019 model. The latest Kindle – which starts at $99.99 – brings Amazon's basic e-reader closer to the latest Kindle Paperwhite, while offering a number of quality of life improvements. The 2022 model offers longer battery life, a 300ppi screen, and charges via USB-C instead of micro-USB. It also offers 16GB of storage as standard and comes in a “Denim” color that resembles the soft blue you might associate with jeans.

In the past, Amazon's latest ad-supported Kindle was priced at $74.99 ($25 off), including three months of Kindle Unlimited. But right now, you can only buy the Kindle at Best Buy and Target for the full retail price of $99.99.

The best deals on Kindle Kids (2022)

The latest Kindle wasn't the only e-reader Amazon introduced in 2022. The entry-level model arrived alongside a new Kindle Kids, which is identical to the standard model but comes with a handful of accessories and offers age-appropriate content for younger readers who prefer digital books. Like the last-generation Kindle Kids, the latest model costs $20 more than the base model, bringing the MSRP to $119.99.

In terms of additional features, the new Kindle Kids Edition consists of four items: the device, a cover, a two-year extended replacement warranty (in case the device breaks), and one year of Amazon Kids Plus. The latter, along with the kid-friendly patterns, is the biggest selling point for the device, as it allows parents to give their child access to games, videos, and books—including those in the PercyJackson And Harry Potter Series – at no additional cost.

On Amazon Prime Day, the Kindle Kids went on sale for $99.99, which is $20 off its all-time low and the cheapest price since Black Friday. But right now, you can only buy the e-reader from Amazon and Best Buy (if you're a My Best Buy Plus or Total member) for $94.99 ($25 off).

Amazon's latest Kindle Kids is identical to the standard Kindle—that is, it has a 300ppi display and supports USB-C charging—but comes with a case, an extended two-year warranty, and one year of Amazon Kids Plus.

The best deals for Kindle Paperwhite (2021)

Amazon's latest Kindle Paperwhite is the 11th generation model, which comes with USB-C support, longer battery life, and a larger 6.8-inch display. The e-reader launched more than two years ago and is often heavily discounted at retailers like Amazon and Best Buy, especially around Black Friday and during the holiday season.

When the latest Kindle Paperwhite first launched in 2021, it came in two entry-level configurations: an 8GB model with ads for $139.99 and an 8GB model without ads for $159.99. These days, however, it's difficult to find either model in stock, and the ad-supported 16GB version ($149.99) and ad-free version ($169.99) tend to be more widely available. There's also a 32GB ad-free Signature Edition for $189.99 that's identical to the standard Paperwhite, except it has Qi wireless charging and a sensor that automatically adjusts the backlight when needed.

Amazon also launched a Kindle Paperwhite Kids for $169.99 that comes with a kid-friendly case, a two-year extended replacement warranty, and one year of Amazon Kids Plus, similar to the Kindle Kids mentioned above. All 2021 models are also similar to the 2018 model in that they offer a waterproof design and Audible audiobook support.

In the past, the 16GB Paperwhite has been discounted as much as $99.99. Unfortunately, the standalone model is currently only available at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target starting at $149.99 (the full retail price). If you're OK with buying a bundle, you can also buy it at Amazon with a power adapter and fabric case starting at $184.97 ($20 off), leather case starting at $191.97 ($20 off), or a “cork” case starting at $199.97 ($20 off).

The best Kindle Scribe deals

The ad-free Kindle Scribe is Amazon's largest e-reader yet – and that also sets it apart from previous Kindle models. It has a 10.2-inch, 300 dpi display and the same long battery life Kindles are known for. What sets the Scribe apart from other models, however, is that it comes with one of two styluses that can be used to annotate books, doodle, or take notes. In our testing, we found the e-reader's note-taking features lacking, but Amazon has already started improving the software through free OTA software updates, bringing it up to par with other e-ink competitors.

We recently saw the Kindle Scribe drop to an all-time low price of $234.99 on Prime Day, but right now you can only buy it at Amazon and Target in its base 16GB configuration with a Basic Pen and three months of Kindle Unlimited for the full retail price of $339.99. The 16GB Kindle Scribe is also available bundled with a leather sleeve and power adapter starting at $389.97 ($60 off), or in a 32GB configuration with the Premium Pen, leather sleeve, and power adapter starting at $439.97 ($60 off).

A note on the Kindle Oasis

Until recently, Amazon also sold the 2019 Kindle Oasis. In addition to a 7-inch, 300 ppi E Ink display, the Oasis was unique in that it offered physical buttons for turning pages. Unfortunately, the waterproof e-reader is not on sale or in stock in new condition at Amazon or any other major retailer. The international version of the e-reader is currently available at Amazon for $135 (half price), although it may not be worth buying right now. Amazon does not ship it to US addresses, and more importantly, the Oasis is no longer listed as part of Amazon's official Kindle lineup. This suggests that Amazon may have discontinued it and we may see a newer version in the near future.
