Assa Abloy, the large Swedish conglomerate that owns a whole host of lock and security companies such as Kwikset, Level Lock and the non-American version of Yale, is working with Boston Dynamics to develop a new digital door access system that will allow Boston Dynamics' Spot robots to autonomously access secured areas. The two intend to make it easier for companies to implement a robot security dog that can patrol buildings inside and out unhindered.
Boston Dynamics' Spot robot has been equipped with digital credentials that communicate via Bluetooth with Assa Abloy's HID Signo readers, allowing the bots to easily pass through automatically opening doors without having to tap the control panel with their paw.
Some companies like Asylon Robotics have developed their own spot “DroneDog” (spotted at the Atlanta Falcons' stadium) that can also penetrate secured areas. But Assa Abloy already has one of the world's largest installed bases of door access systems. Working closely with Boston Dynamics could mean that robot patrol guards will become the norm in the future sooner than we think.
