Data breach leaks SSNs of over 230,000 Comcast customers

A data breach exposed the names, addresses, social security numbers and birth dates of more than 237,700 Comcast customers. The breach stems from a security incident at Financial Business and Consumer Solutions (FBCS), a debt collection agency previously used by Comcast, according to a report filed Friday with the state of Maine, reported by Beeping computer And TechCrunch.

FBCS announced that there had been a breach in February that exposed confidential information of more than 4.2 million people. FBCS told Comcast in July that its customer data was affected, saying an “unauthorized party downloaded data from FBCS systems and encrypted some systems as part of a ransomware attack.”

Total number of people affected (including residents): 237,703

Total number of Maine residents affected: 22

Date(s) of violation: February 14, 2024

Date of Breach Discovery: July 17, 2024

Breach Description: External System Breach (Hacking)

Comcast states that the data included in the breach “dates to 2021” and that use of FBCS’s services was discontinued in 2020. Truist Bank also revealed that some of its customers were affected by the FBCS security breach. Comcast is offering identity theft protection and credit monitoring services to customers affected by the leak.

Last December, Comcast reported a massive data breach that affected more than 35 million people, including names, contact information, some Social Security numbers and dates of birth.
