Ford is making a special, private-brand adapter to give its electric vehicle customers access to the Tesla Supercharger. The automaker will offer its new adapter alongside the current one manufactured by Tesla for customers still waiting for a complementary adapter, and will begin shipping today.
The adapters are manufactured by electric vehicle equipment supplier Lectron, which has already manufactured its own “Vortex” NACS to CCS adapters. Lectron previously had to recall its adapters due to a design flaw that allowed them to unlock while charging.
Lectron CEO Christopher Maiwald said in a State of Charge interview that the problem has been resolved. In an email to The edgeFord public relations representative Eddie Fernandez wrote that the new adapters were not the same as those Ford was asking customers to use. “The named replacement adapters impacted under this customer satisfaction program represented only a small portion of the total offering,” Fernandez said.
Ford recently launched its Power Promise campaign to help electric vehicle adopters adapt to lifestyles, offering a free home charger with standard installation.
