Google appeals judge’s decision forcing app store competition on Android

Today, Google filed its official appeal of the district court's verdict and jury verdict Epic vs Google. Judge James Donato's ruling earlier this week would force the company to distribute third-party app stores on Google Play and remove requirements for Google Play apps to use its billing system, among other pro-competition changes.

Google had announced that it would appeal the ruling. “As we have previously noted, these changes would jeopardize consumer privacy and security, make it harder for developers to promote their apps, and reduce competition on devices,” Lee-Anne Mulholland, vice president of regulatory affairs at Google, said in a blog post on Monday. “While these changes are likely to please Epic, they will ultimately have a number of unintended consequences that harm American consumers, developers and device manufacturers.”

Donato's ruling this week said Google's changes must take effect starting November 1, 2024 and would remain in effect until November 1, 2027.
