Two years after announcing support, Ikea's Dirigera hub can now be updated to act as a bridge between Ikea's smart home devices and Matter-enabled systems. The software update builds on early beta support and enables Ikea's full range of Zigbee-based smart home devices – such as lights, blinds, controls, air purifiers and sensors – to communicate with Matter-enabled devices from any manufacturer.
Adding support for existing devices to Matter is a small but important step in Ikea's plan to fully support the new smart home protocol. It's the same lukewarm approach Philips Hue has taken, but hopefully with better results. Other companies like Aqara have adopted the standard more broadly by launching native Matter devices that don't require protocol translation bridges.
Ikea's smart home hubs have always had custom integrations that allowed the products to communicate with setups from Apple, Google and Amazon. “With Matter, we are expanding these possibilities even further,” says David Granath, Range Manager at Ikea of Sweden. “We believe that by combining our decades of experience in home living with innovative technology, we are in a unique position to break down the barriers and enable more people to have a smarter everyday life.”
Matter support for Dirigera is available at any location where the hub is sold.
