Imgur is going to be less strict about memes with adult humor

Memes on image-hosting service Imgur that “contain references to adult humor” will no longer be considered adult, the company announced in a post detailing changes to its content moderation policies.

The changes announced this week could mean you can see sharper memes more easily on the platform. Under the previous rules, memes marked as adult may not have been seen as often because users are required to log in to view adult content on Imgur.

Imgur is making the changes after gathering feedback about its content moderation over the course of this year, including that its policies, “particularly regarding adult content, feel inconsistently applied, too subjective, or just overall rather confusing,” according to a Contributed by Imgur Product Manager Martyn O'Neill. Today, adult content consists “exclusively of sexualized or ‘lewd’” content.

After the adjustments, O'Neill said warnings/post removals dropped nearly 35 percent month-over-month. Significantly fewer posts are also marked as adult-friendly; This number has decreased by almost 50 percent.
