Moment's SuperCage is a new smartphone accessory that improves the functionality and ergonomics of using a smartphone as a professional video camera. Smartphone cages for mobile filmmakers aren't a new idea—even Moment sells a cheaper alternative—but the SuperCage is the first to integrate a USB-C hub, meaning one less accessory is needed.
This allows smartphones with a USB-C port to record to an external storage device (which on the iPhone 15 and 16 enables ProRes 4K recording at 60 frames per second if the storage is fast enough) while still being charged from a power bank via the 100W passthrough port.
The company has made a name for itself with accessories like lenses and MagSafe tripod mounts that make it easier to film and take photos with a smartphone. The SuperCage is available for pre-order on Kickstarter for $199. Although backing crowdfunded products always comes with risks, Moment has already successfully shipped 10 other products through the platform.
The SuperCage uses an extendable clamp to securely hold a smartphone in an aluminum ring that can be upgraded with handles and mounts for attaching other filmmaking equipment.
Any NATO rail compatible accessory can be attached to the top and sides of the SuperCage, while the bottom of the cage can accommodate tripods and other mounts compatible with Arca rails.
Moment's SuperCage's hub also features an SD card slot, microphone and headphone jacks, a total of four USB-C ports, and a 4K HDMI port so the rig can be connected to a larger display. Shipping for those who back the SuperCage's Kickstarter campaign is scheduled to begin in December 2024.
