Now searches on Google Flights will suggest Amtrak train rides, too

Amtrak fares and travel suggestions are being integrated into Google Search as part of Google's efforts to offer more environmentally friendly travel options than flights. Now, when you search for airfares on Google or Google Flights between destinations with Amtrak terminals, you'll also get suggested train rides that you can click through to the Amtrak website to purchase.

Google has been working to provide sustainable transportation options for some time, and has previously shown suggested train rides, but without the fares and easy redirection to the Amtrak website to purchase the specific tickets – although it didn't work every time I did it did tried it.

Google also calculates how much more CO2 emissions are saved by taking the train to your destination. When I searched for trains from New York to Baltimore, it showed that trains save “about 87 percent in carbon emissions per passenger” compared to driving.

Google's suggestions for the train journey say it is “more climate-friendly than flying.” However, these Amtrak fares are painful. Google's suggested flights between New York and Washington DC started at $108, while the cheapest Amtrak ticket cost $243.
