Rivian now delivers its electric trucks and SUVs with a three-motor configuration that offers an additional power boost compared to the two-motor version. The new 850 hp powertrain uses Rivian's new in-house Enduro motors, one on the front axle and two on the rear axle.
The new three-engine system forms the basis for Rivian's redesigned Gen 2 models, which launched earlier this year only in a two-engine configuration.
As reported by Interior views of electric vehiclesThese 2025 Rivian models are the company's first with three motors, as the previous generation was only available with two and four motors. Rivian will begin shipping its four-motor Gen 2 version early next year.
Between the front and rear motors sits Rivian's new Max battery pack, which can propel the vehicle up to 405 miles on a single charge in economy mode or 371 miles in general-purpose mode. The R1T Ascend Tri-Max starts at $99,900.
Tesla's Cybertruck, currently the best-selling all-electric truck, is also available with two or three motors, but the latter “Cyberbeast” model has a higher starting price of $113,990 compared to the Rivian. The electric vehicle market is seeing an increase in sales year-on-year, but compared to electric cars and SUVs, electric trucks are still just a drop in the bucket.
