The Video Game History Foundation is “not done fighting” after US Copyright Office refuses exemption to aid preservation

Back in April, I wrote about a hearing that took place between representatives Video Game History Foundation, the Rhizome project, and the Software Preservation Network, in which they argued the case for a DMCA exemption that would allow researchers to remotely access out-of-print games in libraries and archives. Representatives from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) and the AACS were in opposition, with ESA legal representative Steve Englund at one point fretting about some sort of hellish “online arcade that (he’d) been warning about for the last several proceedings”.

Last Friday, as per a statement released by the VGHF and spotted by PC Gamer, the US Copyright Office officially denied the exemption.

Warhammer 40000: Space Marine 2 rolls back difficulty changes that made fighting xenos “intense and stressful”

The developers of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have released an update to the third-person shooter that reverts a lot of tough difficulty changes made in a previous patch. Turns out upping the spawn rate of the vicious Tyrannid baddies across all difficulty modes was not welcome among the meathead murder boys of the Imperium. And this change wasn’t the only one that caused enough ructions to justify hasty recalibrations from Saber Interactive.

Earlier this month, we learned that Star Citizen studio Cloud Imperium Games were mandating overtime for employees in the lead-up to their fan convention, Citizencon, which was held this past weekend. So maybe it was just him fighting against someone [that] was posing a problem for them.”

Never mind, Harada. Here’s a few other corporate characters you could try to squeeze into Tekken 8.

In handsome metroidvania Alruna And The Necro-Industrialists you are a dryad fighting the corpse of capitalism

Alruna And The Necro-Industrialists opens with paired quotes from T.S. Eliot’s The Wasteland and Mad Max: Fury Road – a blend of influences that would typically get you kicked out of the Creative Writing Club for being simultaneously too fancy and too obvious, but the game beyond the epigraph looks pretty swish.

It’s “a compact and high-density Metroidvania, with a focus on sequence-breaking and playing things out of order”. It uses a square aspect display ratio calibrated to give wizened Game Boy enthusiasts the shakes, and is made up of 200 single-screen rooms that “slot into the larger puzzle-box of the world”. Also, you play a thorn witch who looks a bit like 1950s Tinkerbell, with a touch of Betty Boop. Here’s a trailer.
