Miramax is ready to install a new one Scary movie in theaters, and this time the studio is doing the sensible thing by involving the Wayans brothers directly.
deadline reports that Marlon, Shawn and Keenen Ivory Wayans have signed a deal to co-write/co-produce a new film Scary movie Reboot for Miramax, which, like previous installments, will imitate a number of other horror films. Rick Alvarez (White chicks, Little man) will also appear as co-author and producer.
The Wayans brothers created this first Scary movie franchise in 2000 and in a statement about the new film, they expressed their excitement about collaborating with “the new Miramax to bring these laughs to theaters where they belong.”
Miramax boss Jonathan Glickman added that “the timing is perfect to bring the series back to the big screen,” and said the studio is “happy to have Keenen, Marlon and Shawn's unique comedic vision bring it to one to audiences around the world.”
Although the first two Scary movies – directed by Keenan and starring Marlon and Shawn – were extremely successful at the box office, the brothers left the series after contract negotiations for a third part failed. During an appearance on the Comedy Gold Minds podcast in 2021, Marlon Wayans insisted that he and his brothers “didn't get out of a franchise,” but that Miramax, under the leadership of Harvey Weinstein, “didn't want to do our deal, and they did.” “got it.”
The new Scary movie Production is expected to begin sometime next year. There's no word yet on who else from the franchise's original cast might return or if any newcomers might join the project.
