Can you feel it? There's a slight chill in the air, the sun is setting earlier, and the leaves are starting to change (at least in my Midwestern city). We're in the middle of that time of year when everyone starts posting the Kermit the Frog vampire meme to show how ready they are for Halloween. I'm even starting to eye the Shudder re-subscribe button.
October has its own atmosphere in the cinema, and this month, among other things, has cinema releases Operation Blood Hunt, a film about the fight of special forces against werewolves in the Pacific in 1944, and Seven cemeteriesa film starring Danny Trejo about a man who hires a witch to revive his troupe and save a woman's ranch. And let's not forget Rumors, which I am very happy about.
So I've got a few spooky movie trailers from this week for you to check out below, along with two streaming series. Enjoy!
1922s Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror was a Dracula Film in everything but name. So much so that Bram Stoker's heirs obtained a court order to have the copies of the film destroyed, but some copies remained. Now, over 100 years after its publication, Nosferatu is getting a remake with Bill Skarsgård as the vampire Count Orlok, aka Nosferatu. Lily Rose-Depp and Willem Dafoe also star.
The latest trailer does a great job of creating the atmosphere of terror that the townspeople feel towards Count Orlok, but Focus Features doesn't quite show us Orlok himself. Nosferatu hits theaters on December 25th.
companion
“I don’t know what the hell is going on with Warner Bros.” companion. The teaser for this Drew Hancock-directed film begins with a head illusion that makes it seem like it's a love story. Then it quickly turns into what looks like a thriller about a woman (Sophie Thatcher) held captive by a man (Jack Quaid).
I also believe this is a head fake. There's a bizarre moment at the end of the trailer where Thatcher's character holds a steadfast hand over a candle until her arm catches fire. She's crying, so she's clearly feeling pain, but the film's classification – it's a sci-fi thriller – makes me wonder what's going on underneath.
I was hoping that by texting the number in the description on the trailer's YouTube page, I would learn a little more. This is a questionnaire on the topic “Find your companion today”, which also includes a request for a selfie. This is what I ended up getting:
This didn't answer any questions for me, but at least I'm getting marketing copy now. Anyway, companion hits theaters on January 10th next year.
Three years after the first hit season of Squid game After the Netflix show came to an end and spawned a reality show spin-off, it returns with its second season on December 26th. A new teaser this week showed Gong Yoo's salesman preparing for work (and probably a few slaps). It ends with him speaking directly to the camera and asking, “Sir, would you like to play a game with me?”
The franchise, HBO's new series, based on the making of a fictional comic book-style film, looks to be a delightful take on Hollywood's ongoing superhero obsession. It was written by Jon Brown, who also wrote ConsequenceThe film stars Himesh Patel and Lolly Adefope as Daniel and Dag, two of the film's production staff. Daniel Brühl is also there – a bit of fun casting given his role as Zemo in several Marvel productions. The franchise Starts streaming tonight at 10pm ET on Max.
