Google and the Justice Department are facing off again, this time in a lawsuit over whether Google has a monopoly in the advertising technology markets.
The trial begins Sept. 9 in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia. The Justice Department argues that Google has unfairly blocked the market for ad tech tools that publishers and advertisers rely on to monetize their websites and market their products. Google counters that it has created efficient products that work well for customers and that it faces a lot of competition.
The trial follows a historic ruling in favor of the government in another antitrust case against Google before a different judge. A Washington, DC, district court judge said Google illegally monopolized the online search market. So as the ad tech case gets underway, the government is also considering what kind of remedies it will ask for to restore competition in search.
